2  Public Discussion Board / Public Notice Boards / Re: Simon Norton RIP on: February 20, 2019, 03:27:46 PM
Later news has come in to me today that Simon Norton’s funeral will be on Sunday 24th February at Golders Green Crematorium, Hoop Lane (London for those on DABF) at 11.00am.
I was really surprised and shocked to here the news of Simon’s passing. I knew he had missed the last BABUS committee meeting because of cold weather because of his knees, but I simply put this down to partially getting older, and partially other ongoing life-long health conditions. I genuinely had no idea he had a hear condition, but this may have been a sudden/undiagnosed thing.
I first heard of Simon via his Campaign for Better Transport/Transport 2000 Cambs and Suffolk branch I think it was, and when I joined BABUS in 2009, he’d heard of my work on the Forum now known as ATVBF. It had been mentioned that they were looking for a website person, having been left the lurch by their previous person. Subsequently I expanded my role with BABUS, and have currently done ten years this month IIRC.
It’s clear that we didn’t always see eye to eye, but we did 9 times out of 10 – but he still respected and supported everyone around him. Just like most local councillors or trade unions, I kind of supported most of his throughs, even if there were a few that might seem to be more unsuitable.
Following the launching of his biography of sorts (The Genius In My Basement), I kinda liked and respected him even more. Without trying to make this all about me, I see certain aspects of his personality are like me (early start late finish, distributing information in person) – and some of his other aspects (hygiene etc.) might be more like the old me than the new me. But I’m sad to say, no matter how many bumps in the road over the years we’ve known each other, that I have truly lost a friend.

[quote au"thor=John Yunnie link=topic=717.msg2072#msg2072 date=1545682039]
Interesting to see the use of "A" and "B" numbers.  Here on the Isle of Wight we have three major routes (1,7 and 9) that split and go completely different ways for part of the journey.  Our Bus and Rail Users' Group has been pressing Southern Vectis for a long time to distinguish between the differences by use of 1A, 7A and 9A but are constantly told that to do so would be old fashioned and is unnecessary.

But then Stagecoach East don't bother with more than a couple of busway "numbers"....

8  Public Discussion Board / Public Notice Boards / Express Coach Guides are back – and expanded! on: April 01, 2018, 05:23:21 PM
Find out more about National Coach Times via our websites or the dedicated page at … quote code FOR2018 and get a fiver off when you spend £40 on anything on our website, over the next six weeks!

By very popular demand, they are back! It’s been a while since we’ve done a Express Coaches and Long Distance Bus Services guide, with a loose-leaf one under preparation for a while now! But, now that National Express have publicly allowed everyone access to their Coach Guide-style timetables, the project has taken renewed emphasis!

So, what do the books cover?
•   Express Coach Services
•   Rail Link Services
•   Long Distance Services
•   Airport and other Strategic Services (including some short connections where routes have been split or rationalised)
•   A few occasional routes that supplement the main network, like A14
… so we have a combined four volume set. This is bound permanently, not in an updatable ring binder this time round ! A little less information on Scotland is deliberate, as we’re looking at Passing Around Scotland covering this in more detail.

So, for now, this is an expanded version of our previous editions. Part 1 contains timetables and farecharts for National Express Services. Part 2 contains Megabus, Citylink, timetables, including those that Megabus sell through tickets to. Part 2, 3, 4 cover GreenLine, AirportBusExpress, EasyBus, New Bharat, Commonwealth Coaches, plus selected other bus and coach services. The latter are those where bus/train tickets, or bus/coach through tickets are offered, including those that appeared in the Other Operators part of NX Guide years ago. This section also includes those services that used to be part of the National Rail Timetable, largely those which connected airports or between lines. We also include other strategic services, as much as we can squeeze in!  If you’d like to find a list of services in each part, go to or drop us a line and we can post one to you!

In this guide, we have four books, see as follows;
Volume 1 (XC1) – National Express -
Volume 2 (XC2) – Megabus, Citylink, Other Services, 1 to 69 -
Volume 3 (XC3) – Other Services, 70 to Red Arrow -
Volume 4 (XC4) – Other Services, S1 to XL -

A4 parts – between 450 and 500 pages each. All include an Index to Places Served (covering all four volumes), while each part includes an Index to Services for the routes in that particular volume. Cover is 250micron laminated, and side bound.

Purchasing Options – a hard copy of each part, including UK postage/packing, will cost £45.00. Buy all four for £160.00 – saving £20.00 !

You can buy all four on CD or DVD for £40.00.

The books are in final stages of proofing, and will be sent out w/c 7th April 2018. We hope to have a few at the Enfield sale the previous Saturday.
9  Public Discussion Board / Public Notice Boards / BABUS Newsletter for Spring 2018 on: March 22, 2018, 07:12:39 PM
The Spring 2018 edition of the BABUS (Bedford Area Bus Users Society) Newsletter is now online, and ready for viewing. However, as we were about to close for press, we had news of some further changes happening, over and on top of the ten pages of changes we’ve had to report in Newsletter 35. So, with that in mind, we’ve put together a “Stop Press” of this information into a four page mini-Newsletter – or Supplement.

OK - Stagecoach have new timetables online for lots of their routes across East, but not much yet for Norfolk and Wisbech. The changes for Bedford (THESE ARE ATTACHED BELOW) are at the very end (I did this for BABUS Newsletter Spring 2018) and the rest I've not had the chance to digest... so see below and file attachments , which I've placed all in one place at...

13  Public Discussion Board / Bus Operator Issues / Re: New bus to Great Denham on: March 16, 2018, 09:10:41 AM
service 11 is set to be withdrawn end of this month

It always seemed unlikely that Great Denham could support two competing routes.

Actually three routes if you think about it - 8 11 and 24!

Re the 11 withdrawal, there will be a limited service by Grant Palmer... from the second draft of BABUS Newsletter 35 (Spring 2018) which should be going out at the start of next week...

From Monday 5th March 2018
Stagecoach in Bedford Service 11
(Bedford – Biddenham – Great
Denham) Withdrawn, but see below for a
part replacement. (Incidentally Stagecoach
8 is also on diversion past the rail station at
the moment, until July).

NEW SERVICE Grant Palmer Service
11 (Bedford – Biddenham – Great
Denham) Some journeys from this service
are being maintained after Stagecoach have
pulled out – the 06.10, 06.49, 07.19 from
Great Denham, and the 18.12, 18.43 and
19.15 back from the railway station. Also
see Service 24 (below).

Grant Palmer Service 24 (Bedford –
Kempston – Great Denham) Revised
timetable for service 24, with journeys after

14  Public Discussion Board / Technical Problems / Re: Problem posting on Committee Area on: March 16, 2018, 09:05:10 AM
I'm having a problem posting on the Committee Area, but not every time - sometimes it's straightforward, but I've tried 3 times (on different days, and sometimes immediately after successfully posting something else) to post something and keep getting an error message.

Hello there Frances,

Sorry for the delay, as I wanted to do a proper response here.

The BB can be with issues from time to time, although we use a different web hosting operating system to those on the rest of Suzy’s Forums. This means it’s not down for a  few seconds for unexpected restarts lo However, I would always suggest typing up in a word processor or text editor, copying and pasting to post more easily.

The other issue is the attachments. Please ensure the attachments don’t exceed 5mb per post. While this may seem small, it’s the limit on the php based Bulletin Boards across the world. So, if you have more than that, or close to that, split them into more than one post. This is frequently a cause for timing out and errors on my other Forums when I try to post.
